.gov.ng Registration

Who can register a .gov.ng domain?

Allotment of gov.ng is restricted to the constituents o Government of Nigeria at various levels right from Federal, State and local government levels on request.

Before you place an order for a .gov.ng domain, please take note of the following:

To register any third-level domain within .gov.ng, state government entities must register the full state name or the official abbreviation of the state name similar to that used in vehicle license plate registrations.

Cities and townships are encouraged to register for a fourth-level domain under a state's third-level domain to the extent such an option is available (e.g. .lg.gov.ng for Lagos state). When this option is not available, cities and townships may register a third-level domain.

To register a third-level .gov domain name, cities and townships must comply with the following:

  1. Cities and townships may ONLY register for a domain name representing their city or township.
  2. The domain name must include the city (town) name and a clear reference to the state in which the city (town) is located.

Cities and townships may NOT register a local program/initiative, such as a local library, etc
Cities and townships may denote the state abbreviation after the city or township name, preferably separated by a hyphen.
Generic names are not allowed. (eg. shipping.gov.ng is not allowed).
For domains under gov.ng, the domain must be derived from the name of the organization/entity. (eg. National Planning Commission can opt for a domain npc.gov.ng but NOT xyz.gov.ng or planning.gov.ng)

Registration process
To register a .gov.ng, you would have to send a scanned letter on the letterhead of the ministry or state government parastatal that plans to register the domain name to support@tfhost.ng. The letter must contain the domain name to be registered (confirm that the domain of choice meets all criteria by sending a mail to support@tfhost.ng with the proposed domain name before preparing this letter) and the name of the person authorized to register the domain. This authorized person must be working at the ministry and the following details should be stated in the letter

  • Full name of the authorized person
  • Designation
  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • Contact address

Once this has been sent, your request would be veted and NITDA would proceed to confirm that your request is genuine. It should take about 1 week for your domain to be registered and activated.

How long would it take to register a .gov.ng domain?

It would generally take about a week as the request for the domain must be confirmed and verified before the domain can be registered.

Feel free to send a mail to support@tfhost.ng if you have any inquiries
